Having just picked up the latest issues of Modern Railways and our

new interest shown in the NSHSL (North-South High Speed Line).
What I couldn't understand was the choice of routes.
The route is North to somewhere near Rugby then a junction into East
and West Coast lines.
Presumably that's Great Central to near where it crosses the WCML (and
where the Birmingham Line branches off) and a new line for Nottingham
and the NE.
West Coast for Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston and Carlisle.
East Coast for Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle and Scotland.
The route seems longer than an ECML based one. ISTM that would reduce
its viability, but that magazine hasn't reached me yet.
Surely, reaching Scotland via Birmingham, Manchester then Leeds would
make much more sense, with Nottingham on a branch.
And why build a TGV just to Carlisle seems expensive for such a small
place.
Presumably they wouldn't - they'd use the existing WCML to get to
Carlisle and Scotland, but the East Coast route would be quicker for
Scotland.
