And diesel?
Ok, it could be made from shale, as the Germans tried in the last war, but
how much shale is there?
As for coal, the suggestion that a line could stockpile 100 years worth of
it will run into two problems (at least) 1/ the space for such a pile would
take up enough land to be an eyesore or they won't have the land anyway and
2/ the local fire brigade will say no.
All the methods of producing town gas etc, work out more expensive than
generating electricity.
