There is loads of coal under Britain, the cost of extracting it is high
and in some areas, local authority planning depts won't permit it. With
the rising cost of oil and gas, it will be possible to mine more coal.
It's amazing that the newest deep level coal mine at Selby, Yorkshire
was closed last year, it beggars belief.
Once upon a time up to the late 1960s/early 70s, all our piped gas was
made from coal, it was called "coal gas" or "town gas". You can also
make water gas and producer gas from coal.
Regards Mike.
