Mike's got a great site but he's not that atypical. I'd say most folks try
to give something back and FWIW I've found that the manufacturers and
retailers I purchase from have been very helpful.

The problem is is that many model rail operations are one man shows, and
whilst teh one man in question may be the best plan drawer or mechanical
engineer in the world but they know didley squat about how to market
efectively or even how to create a website.

For instance, here's a link to John Turner's websites, he runs a shop and
if you hang around news:uk.rec.models.rail you'll note he's very acive in
giving free tips advice, a bit of gossip ... his *shop* website though is
next to useless. It say's who he is, where he is, what he deals in, but
that's it, no stock lists, no desciptions, no prices. Nevertheless (from
past experiance) he'll bend over backwards to help. By the same token he
runs several photo collection websites, he retains copyright but anyone's
welcome to have a look through any time they like. Only if you want a high
res print etc is any payment expected unlike ...

moving on to the subject of photographs/track plans and the like I do share
your views,l there are groups and induviduals who hoard every scrap of
material they can get their hands on and want paying for everything, in
advance, before you can even tell if it is actually what you want or not or
in anyway useful. So yes there is a certain amount of greed but from
experiance that sort of chap can be found in every walk of life.

IOW shop around.
