Never heard of this move before this post.
Did they say for for use in UK ? Could be an overseas contract ?

A typo for more JT42-xyz ? Past experience of north american rail
forums suggest a high proportion of US cranks do not understand ''rest
of the world'' model numbers and are laregly unable to grasp basic
concept of non North American railway practice.
G does mean single cab, J means double cab so the image would match the
model number. J is all but unknown in US. It is hard to determine
specifics from emd model numbers - you only have to look at the old G12
export range that through the 1960s appeared in just about every shape
or guage you could think of - and from several licencees.
Also I would have thought the RT/NR guidance notes or group standards
would not allow one ended freight locos of that nature in UK ??? I have
not checked on that point though, not sure which one of the document
mountain to look in.
One ended push-pull freight flashed through my mind too - but I'd be
pretty sure there would have been some kind of protoyping and testing
before production.
So all in all I would say someone over the warer has got the model
number wrong - or the job lot is not for internal UK use.
