Are they really. I would suggest that trespassers being struck by
trains is the largest cause of death on the railways, by a long way.
Provided that pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians are properly
catered for, which would usually mean leaving the crossing open for
them, I see no great problem in most cases. A longish detour that is
no great problem when the detour is powered by an internal
combustion engine is something else when powered by human or horse
power. However, I don't believe Network Rail can be trusted on this.
They have a number of offences to be taken into consideration in
this respect, such as their activities at level crossings in
Scotland.
