I did - although the two teenage girls in the same predicament had (understandably) gone straight to the barriers. All three of us were directed to some inspector chappie who heard the tale and sent us back to the desk were the somewhat disinterested staff eventually agreed to sell us tickets.


I didn't consider myself lucky by the way. It was entirely the railway's failing that we were all ticketless (even the permit-to-travel machine was broken). And I'd specifically approached the guard *before* alighting - "buy one at the other end" she said.

It's unlikely that I'd have been paying any sort of PF in that situation. As it was we'd all been explicitly instructed to travel ticketless by CT staff - and I had plenty of time to argue if it had come to that.

Incidentally the irony of this is that the originating station was actually staffed at the time, but the booking clerk was on litter-picking duty on the other platform.
