Agreed. Probably the best thing that could ever happen to public
transport was the Web journey planner. Before that, local buses were
more or less entirely for local people, as that was often the only way
to find out about them.
I can think of a good many journeys I've done by a combination of
train and bus that I'd not have done if it hadn't been for Web
planners - and a good many that'd have taken longer because a Web
planner pointed out a less obvious but quicker route.
