So are steam locomotives, or they should be, as parts are meant to be
fully interchangeable. It didn't quite work like that in practice, one
method was to machine worn parts to stepped sizes. Other locos had the
numbers punched on so had their own sets of parts.

The need for standardisation means that sooner or later the preserved
lines are going to have to order some new steam locos to a standard
type, and the old stuff will have to be retired. As there have been big
improvements since the last steam locos were built there are useful
savings to be had, provided a sufficiently large order can be put
together. This is a difficulty that has so far held back the replacement
of steam locos on German narrow gauge lines.
