Sadly, the 40s were all withdrawn from front-line service in 1985. There are
a small number earning their keep on preserved railways, including the two
at the East Lancs Railway, Bury. One of the two locos based at Bury is
however now maintained to main-line standards and works tours quite
regularly.

As Chris Tolley has said, there are still quite a few class 37s (which have
similar noses) in regular use on freights, but they sound nothing like a
class 40 (no whistle). The class 20s do have a pronounced whistle which
comes close to the lovely sound made by the 40s. DRS, based at Carlisle
operate nuclear flask trains passing through Morcambe using pairs of locos
from their fleet of Class 37s and 20s. A 20 and a 37 on these trans are
common a common site..

This is what you probably saw...

If you drop me an email, I can point you at some downloadable video of
another tour leaving Preston with 40145.
