HST2 - flexibility needed

These trains are likely to be running till 2050. By then, energy costs
will have soared (they are soaring already) Commercial requirements will
be very different. Surely what is needed is optimum flexibility?
This means ordinary coaches and locos, capable of being run HST-style as
one of a number of options eg one loco, on at each end, control from
driving trailers and vehicles or groups of vehicles capable of being
joined or separated easily ie at least as easily as EMU sets.
Heating and ventilation power supplies should be self-contained rather
than drawing on loco power, therefore any traction can be used,
including freight locomotives.
Possibly some form of combined heat and power system for H/V is required
to optimise energy consumption.
We do not want a repeat of the situation that has arisen with mark 3
stock which is capable of running for another 15 years on secondary use
but is over-specced for this type of service and cannot even be stored
except at substantial cost.
