Vista is "Home Premium" and up to date with Microsoft updates (indeed, it seems the auto update process may be part of the problem).

The printer is an HP C4480.

I've got the latest HP software and tried the "HP fix", which doesn't work. (Basically, stop auto update, inhibit some services etc., install, and reinstate the turned off bits). No joy.

The problem doesn't seem restricted to the 4480, nor printers, or even Vista and, if you believe the HP fix, is registry related. However, having trawled the HP support site and seen several "fixes", I'm less than convinced the problem is fully understood. The actual printer drive installs if you use "add printer", the issue seems to be in the installation of the "extra" software for the scanner and to integrate everything in to the "solution centre".

I'm surprised at HP, over the years have installed lots of their printers and other kit and I've always been impressed by how "slick" it was.

Have you tried a registry repair / cleaner program?

If not, try it.

Clean off all the crud that comes with it and try and get the printer driver off the HP website - you want the smallesst most specific driver you can get. ... install it and see if it helps. ...
