Ian Jackson presented the following explanation :
My 'old-style' cordless mouse (a £2 Dunstable Downs purchase) operates
on 27.125MHz (CEPT CB channel 17). It worked fine for about 3 years
but, about 6 months ago, the mouse cursor started spontaneously
drifting up to the top of the screen (and occasionally down to the
bottom).
The pair supplied with my system were on 27Mhz and it has been
troublesome since I got it. Missed typed keys, keyboard lag, mouse
pointer ignoring mouse moves etc.. I found at times I had to keep
moving the receiver closer to the keyboard to get any reception.
The A4 GK-770D (the one Maplin are selling) seems to be able to
overcome the problems by two way communication between PC and the
keyboard/mouse.
I have Wifi built in to my desktop PC and I plugged the A4's USB dongle
into a socket a couple of inches away from the Wifi receiver. It
completely knocked out the Wifi, but that is working on maximum range.
The keyboard + mouse carried on working normally. I moved the USB
dongle to a socket around the back of the PC and it all works fine.
I had thought about 'upgrading' to a modern one which operates on
2.4Ghz, but then wondered how it would get on with my wireless router
(a few feet from it) which talks to my wife's laptop. My immediate
neighbour has a wireless router too. There's also a microwave oven in
my kitchen (immediately below the shack). What are the chances of
trouble-free operation?

Noted on your problems with the erratic behaviour of your original
keyboard and mouse. Apart from the temporary (and very occasional)
phenomenon of 'cursor drift', the only other problem I've had with my
£2 27MHz mouse was a 'sticky' or slipping ball when moving the mouse
to the right. I tried repeated cleaning of it and the sensor rollers,
but the effects didn't last long. Finally, I robbed a similar ball
from a spare mouse, and things are infinitely better.
my CB mouse doesn't have a ball, just an led. Battery still going after 3
years or so.
as with all mice the cursor drift is a driver problem (memory leak), a
reload/boot should fix it
