It is in Alpha at the moment but when we tried it still did not give us what

The real problem is I believe is Intel's proprietary use of the PRISM chipset
used in the majority of Wi-Fi implementations. The current version of SUSE
does not support their vPRO chip either as far as Wi-Fi us concerned.
Now I'm confused, the Prism chipset was from Harris wasn't it, it supported the original 802.11 DSSS 2Mbps standard. You mentioned Centrino Duo, that's Pro Wireless 3945 or 4965 (just maybe 2200) I thought. A quick search tells me that the vPRO chipset includes the 4965ABG wireless chip, but I suppose getting the whole thing set up properly is a little more difficult.
I would expect Intel to be keen on ensuring that Linux works well on their hardware....
