Strange isn't it. Nowhere in the above list do I see "The voice of
Amateur Radio within the UK"...
I guess that the government got wise to this in the end and started to
ignore the "Voice of Amateur Radio within the UK" on the grounds that
they had a vested (i.e. profit orientated) interest in the results of
various legislative outcomes. Enter:- the "Radio Communications
Foundation", the new and "non-profit" offshoot of the RSGB Ltd, book &
magazine publishers.
Some reading this might say that this is not the case and that the
RSGB Ltd has only altruistic ideals, that they are not motivated by
profit. If so, then I suggest you do a little research into what
happened to the magazine "Ham Radio Today".
Ham Radio Today [HRT] was an extremely popular magazine in the UK,
with a greater readership than RadCom. The RSGB Ltd, book & magazine
publishers, altruistically decided to "invest" in HRT, buying them out
with the promise that HRT would flourish with their (RSGB's) help and
support, and that they would even allow the husband and wife editorial
team to maintain full editorial control. Before the ink was dry on the
cheque they closed HRT down...
Please see the RSGB Ltd for what it is, a publisher, nothing more. If
they were to disappear of the face of the Earth tomorrow, Amateur
Radio would continue.
I was very fond of HRT, the magazine, not the therapy, LOL! Sheila Lorek
was a gem, and her husband Chris did a good job of doing all the technical
heavy lifting for her. I don't think she was actually very technically
inclined. I think her call was G8IYA and his was G4HCL, if I remember
right.
I was very annoyed when the RSGB bought out HRT just to close it down. They
were probably the biggest source of criticism of the RSGB at the time, and
I think that it basically amounted to censorship by economic means. If they
thought it would promote membership by eliminating a magazine they must
have been dreaming.
And people wonder why some of us don't like the RSGB? They managed to p*ss
off those of us who wanted Morse testing abolished and then went on to
upset the old guard as well (and me also) by promoting the idea of the M3
licence. At this point they are out of tune with almost everyone.
Despite that, no-one has managed to develop a viable alternative. I think
this may be because they are our IARU member soceity. National ham radio
soceities tend to be locked in place because of this, allowing them to fall
out of step with their country's hams without any consequences. The ARRL is
another case in point.
