I have just passed my foundation exam. Today I am trying to make a
decision about which radio to buy. Initially, I was set on buying an
FT817 (Yaesu) as I do some backpacking in the Summer, and the
hill-walking thing appealed to me. I'd also want to use the rig from
my car. The multiple band coverage is appealing. However, people tell
me I'm going to be "struggling" with the 5W provided by the 817.
Admittedly, I'd like to have 10W available (or more, in anticipation
of passing my Intermediate, later) but don't feel ready to fork out
the kind of money required for a new 10W FT897, and am wary of buying
used transceiver.
If you don't know, or even understand, what it is that you want or why you
want it or the technical issues involved in modifying it, then spend as
little as you
can for in a very few weeks you will have lost interest.
This is not a personal attack on you for you are merely a pawn in the RSCB's
game, but it is a very telling condemnation of the gangrenous degeneration
that is
the M3/CB Fools' Licence scheme that someone who has passed the so-called
"exam" can demonstrate such ignorance about power levels.
Even the CBer, who is judged competent to be able to operate without
passing an exam of any sort, demonstrates better knowledge with his
"afterburners".
