The issue here really is the ability and motivation of the board
members. Some give me cause for confidence, others most certainly
don't.
It is accepted by some RSGB insiders that there is a problem with the
quality of people putting themselves forward for board membership. An
allied difficulty for members is that the information given about each
candidate in the CV and personal statements within RadCom is so
abbreviated and formulaic that the intending voter cannot determine
who, if anyone, is worthy of support. And of course there remains some
suspicion about the RSGB bylaws, which say about the personal
statement - intended to show what the candidate hopes to achieve if
elected - that "extravagant or nonsensical promises will be edited by
the company secretary as board and council members are expected to act
as part of a team". This is a bit like the attorney general having a
veto over the opposition manifesto at a general election; it's totally
unacceptable and has no place in the Society's rules.
I have suggested to the President-to-be that both the CV and the
personal statement - currently limited to 100 words each - should be
greatly expanded by allowing additional information to be given on the
RSGB website and I gather that this idea will shortly be put to the
board; it will require a change to the bylaws. I also thought it might
be both instructive and entertaining to have them tell us their
intentions on YouTube, but this suggestion did not seem to win any
support :-)
