That is just plain silly and obviously bias rather than evidence
based. Unless, of course, you have personally interviewed every
person licenced in the last few years (you certainly haven't spoken
to me).

Here's some anecdotal evidence for you:

Local radio club, Spring 2007, three guys take the Foundation &
intermediate examination (and pass):

Guy1: Electronics Tudor in local 6th form college, teaches digital
electronics, age mid/late twenties. Plans to homebrew amateur digital.

Guy2: Works in computing, age mid-twenties. Has AR88, G5RV. Travels
north to buy public transport to pick up a KW2000.

Guy3: Ex-electronics technician works in law, age 61. Interested in
QRP operating, has ICOM IC 703 and is currently constructing a
BITX20A. Plays with aerials.

Three special examples? Nope, just three guys who had turned up at
IVRC over the previous few months.

Steve, I'm not sure that you have much idea about who is joining the
hobby - all you are seeing is what you want to see.
