Many thanks...
Magnum,
I have one for 80m using 4 slinkies, see (
http://www.radiowymsey.org/FanDipole/slinky.htm ). I slung it up and
it gets out OK to the OK and near Europe. My IC 703 matches it, SWR
worse case is 1.5:1. I'm only running 10 watts SSB which is not
really enough power to cut through the mess that is 80 a lot of the
time.
Anyone will tell you that it will be nothing like an 80 metre dipole
in the clear but if you don't have many options it will at least get
you out. When the band is not too noisy I get some decent results.
Recently, the Slinky aerial was discussed at length (no 'non-pun' intended!) in rec.radio.amateur.antenna. I didn't save any of the postings, but I recall that the vast majority verdict was that it was pretty hopeless. If you don't already subscribe to that NG, it might be worth downloading the last two months' worth of postings.
