It needs to be made more relevant and interesting, not easier.
Indeed, Media studies, about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in the real

applications
far outnumbered available places.
world!
Science started going down in popularity in about 1970, as the job
market went into decline. After 5 years of chemistry, I found each job
had hundreds of applicants, so a waste of time applying. I switched to
electronics, and most of those studying with me made a similar change.
The only student who kept a connection with chemistry was a pretty girl
who became a fashion model.
There were some stats published recently that suggested Media Studies
graduates were the most likely to find suitable employment. Even degrees
like Walt's tourism BA came about because real employers wanted them.
But things change quickly. MBAs were valuable 5 years ago, but they
don't seem to be the passport to a good job any more.
When I switched to electronics, my employer took on loads of young
people each year. They were asked to show their interest in electronics
by bringing along evidence like a project or similar, and were
interviewed by people who actually knew electronics. Now we have
professional HR interviewers who know nothing of the job they are
interviewing for. There is such a rapid turnover in HR staff that they
also know nothing about the company they work for. They ask questions
that any recruitment specialist can teach you how to answer in half a
day. I'm not surprised unsuitable people get employed.
