As for R, W and VD, I'm sure they're very clever people, it's just that
theory of that nature is rarely directly applicable to the practical
problems that engineers have to solve daily.
You've hit the nail on the head there Brian- someone who reads "advanced"
texts and can't understand them, or can't make a link to practical
applications, is all but useless as an engineer. They end up taking on
projects, messing them up, and never completing them. Smart companies sack
them and, often as not, they end up drifting from company to company with a
catalogue of failed projects behind them. Eventually they end up
"donuting" - only getting work away from their home where there reputation
hasn't reached.
