Hi. I'm getting ghosting on my tv and I think it's caused by myJust retune the UHF modulator in the freeview box or switch off UHF
freeview box. The ghosting apparently comes from a terrestial
channel.
Channel 4 I think. My first thought was to use a notch filter or
bandpass filter but then I thought that would block out the channel
completely and I don't want that. Anyone else had this and found a
way
to cure it?
out
and use the scart. It's usually on a menu these days rather than
having
to stick a jewelers screwdriver in a pot at the back as you used to
have
to do with VCR's
I've come across this problem in the past, it is due either poor
isolation
in the switch, in the TV, that switches between the tuner and scart
socket, or by cross talk in the scart cable. If it is the cable then a
better quality screened cable will fix it. If it is the TV then the only
solution is to select an untuned channel when using the digi box; the
ghosting will still be there but it will be noise not a picture and so
not
so obvious.

Cheers Jeff but the freeview box doesn't have a tuner, that's what's
confusing me.
Uh?
I think you might find it DOES have a tuner. Otherwise, how can it receive
the digital signal? Were you thinking of 'modulator'?
That's just for throughput.
After the aerial input, there will be a splitter, one output feeding the
tuner, and the other feeding the RF out connector.
Yes, that sounds about right.
As Jeff says, it might be a scart problem. I have had something similar
when using a DVD recorder. Your TV will be switched to SCART input, but
the TV analogue side of things will still be working. Inside, there will
be a switch which simply selects either the SCART video, or the analogue
detector video. Lack of isolation would produce crosstalk effects. Try
switching the TV to different analogue channel (preferably unused), and
see if the effect varies. What happens if you unplug the TV aerial input?
Nothing. The ghosting is still there but I van't yet pulled the rf into the
video recorder. I'll try that next.
You might also like to try improving the bonding of the earthy side of the
various bits and pieces. I only cured my problem when I earthed the case
of my DVD recorder (instead of the common earth being via the SCART
connections).
That's a good idea. Mine's a hard disc dvd recorder thingy and where I am i
don't have much hope of a decent rf earth because I'm high up.
The STB may also have an RF amplifier to compensate for the loss of the
splitter. It is possible that the RF output is somewhat higher than
without the STB, and the TV set (tuned to analogue) is beginning to
overload a little. This also could produce some odd effects.
When i turn off the freeview box completely and watch terrestial or a video
the problem goes away but then I suppose it would.
Ian.
