At the Dunstable Boot Fair, a trader was selling ex-MOD / Army discone
antennas. The elements where made from "steal tape" (like the sort in
retractable tape measures) and looked to be cut for VHF up (ie over
144MHz). The antennas came with a short folding "mast" (maybe 8ft) and the
price was £15. I was tempted to one, not because I have a particular use
but because they looked interesting. Common sense got the better of me and
I left without one :-(

Does anyone have any idea as to the original purpose. They where with some
bi-conical variant and my guess is an ELINT application. However, while
the discone is useful antenna, I'd have thought the army would have more
specialist antennas for each area of interest. Also, the construction was
less robust than I'd expect for something that could well be "mission
critical".

Now your amateur licence is free, why not send at least £15 per year to
support the
Radio Communications Foundation or STELAR?

er that would be "steel tape".

[1] It isn't necessary, or even good manners, to quote the whole of a
posting in order to add a one-line comment. The usual method, which
you will notice is used on here by those with experience and
consideration for others, is to quote the part of the original posting
that you wish to comment on, and then add your reply underneath.

In the case of your posting, this could have been trimmed to:

To which you might have replied:

ITYM "steel tape".

Which we all knew anyway, making even that truncated posting
irrelevant.
