Agreed. But this wasn't an anti-tank round, or a missile. This was a
"roadside bomb" - from the look of the explosion, it was more of a
'roadmiddle bomb' - made up by irregulars, out of some sort of
bang-stick... Much cheaper than an anti-tank round or missile.
The problem was that is was a "shaped charge" bomb, rather than just a big
lump of explosive. Also, being "road middle" is was able to strike the
weakest part of any tank that tends to be protected from shaped charge or
penetrater anti-tank rounds by the ground.
Protecting the underside of a tank from such attacks would make them very
heavy and was probably not deemed a worthwhile performance trade off- the
Challenger tank was not designed for use in this type of war.
