Ah, I see. I tried tuning my handheld to the local repeater, and then
connecting to it from the Mac. It was a bit weird, what with all the
digital voices, and my voice delayed by a second or so. Just as well
no-one answered me.

Can be quite fun. I once noticed that 10m was pretty open and saw that
there was a node on the Canary Islands active on 29.700. I put a call
out on 10m and got into the node direct. This was relayed through to a
simplex gateway locally and popped out on 70cms. No idea why the OP
chose the FM calling freq, but switching to the hand held I was then
able to call DX across europe using just 15mW on 70cm. Then a Jap on a
PC connected giving quite a number of German stations heart
palpatations as they fought each other for the "new country". Fell
apart at that stage, but was tremendous fun while it lasted.

I'm now confused. Did you say "I was then able to call DX across europe
using just 15mW on 70cm"?

This was with the help of someones telephone line or Broadband connection I
expect. Is this the way of "DX" contacts these days?

Depends whether or not you regard Canary Islands to Mainland Europe as
DX I suppose. I wouldn't call it local.
