Not amateur radio

Since my current accomodation doesn't have anywhere for aerials, I
decided to try to communicate with amateurs via a computer. I registered
for Echolink yonks ago but never actually tried to use it until
recently.
So I ran up EchoMac and magically was able to remember my password and
get it going. After messing with the test server to get levels right,
suddenly this foreign (French) person calls me, and we had a chat.
Afterwords I tried to figure out what had happened. I'm not sure whether
he connected by radio, but there was some radio involved. It sounded
like a VHF/UHF FM link - mobile flutter type effects. There were also
repeater-style bleeps at the end of his over. The text displayed didn't
show his callsign, but some other French -L callsign was shown on my
screen.
So how did this work, since I wasn't connected to anything at the time?
He called my callsign - but since radio was involved somewhere, where
did he get it from - presumably my callsign would have been visible at
his end only if it was direct computer-to-computer, which it wasn't?
