Many a true word ....
In the town where I was brought up, there were many houses without
running water and the residents used to come out into the street with
buckets to fill them from cast iron "wells" at the side of the road.
Most of the same houses were without electricity, and lighting was
provided by means of gas or oil lamps. Bicycles, and even cars, with
acetylene lamps (calcium carbide) were commonplace. You could buy
calcium carbide, gas mantles, oil lamps, etc at the local ironmonger's
shop. That was also where you would take your 2-volt glass
'accumulator' to have it recharged for a few pennies.
:-)
Most houses had a "wireless aerial", which was 7-strand copper wire
strung between two chimneys on the roof-top and neatly insulated at
the ends with porcelain egg insulators.
