He's still the same as when I met him back in the early '80's

I remember I used to listen to him on 40m AM when I was a schoolboy
SWL back in 1957/58. Other well-known calls around at the time
included G3IOL, G3JBL, G3JT, G3IUR, G3LID (!), G3MTB (Motor Torpedo
Boat), G3MUM, G3III, G3AOO, etc, etc. I'm sure Johnny will remember
them all. (Long, long before there were any Class Bs, Novices or
M3s!)

Hi Walt,

Yes I remember it well.
Chatting with "God" *** G2DAF while I was building both his receiver
and his transmitter designs.

The other was G3EPL he was a white stick operator.
He was the Xtal controlled operator on 3680 we gathered for sked there.
During latter years I was involved in a Cardiac Surgery Team.
I was talking to one of the surgeons one day and he said he had a very
nervous white stick man from Whitehaven coming in, saying he was a radio
ham.

I waited till all the admissions were in for the day and found out what ward
Jim was on.
I had never met JIM.
I stood at the door of the 8 bed unit.
Squeezed my nose, so as to talk a bit SSB,ey and said loudly
G3EPL...G3LIV.
One older guy sat up in bed and shouted JOHNNY.
That was our first meeting.
He is of course well SK now

In passing when I went in the RAF as national service.
My moms house still had only Gas. And 1 cold tap.
All water was boiled with a kettle. NO bathroom just
outside loo.

RAF was luxury
How water, electricity, baths, and some guy teaching me CW.
And 16 bob a week pay ( 80p if you youngones cant work that out).

Thanks for the momeries Walt.

de Johnny G3LIV.
