And with all those variations, how come none of them have been taken seriously for any
normal end user task?

We've had it out here before. Simply because the free Unix imitations are so determined
to be open-source, they are all doomed to failure. Why does XP install fine on my
notebook and my desktop PC, with no hardware problems? Why does every Linux distro
have severe problems with such things as graphics drivers? It's because manufacturers
of PC hardware do not always wish to release their sources or api for all to see. Thus the
open-source nature of linux ensures that support for such hardware will either be poor or
non-existent.

OS X has been a relative success because Apple have developed it for a very small set
of hardware devices. Apple can make agreements with hardware manufacturers, and pay
licence fees because it can recover those costs. Free Linux cannot.

I am saddened that there is no serious alternative to Windows. And I fail to see how
Linux could ever catch up unless it drops the free software principle.
