IMHO, making all expense claims public whilst emphasising to MPs that the
claims must be for stuff necessarily incurred as a result of them
performing their duties, with a body that enforces this, would probably
clear the problem up.
How much do you think they should get?
Because the easiest way to pay them is just to give them a lump of money and
tell them to manage as best they can.
Obviously any legitimate expenses would be free of tax but it would mean the
Inland Revenue (or whatever they're called this week) were the people who
got to decide what was taxable and what wasn't, rather than the Fees Office
which is directly run by the HoC...
So why not just give them a quarter of a million quid a year and tell them
to make their own arrangements for staff and pensions and everything else?
