I never had too much interest in watching TV, as a young teenager I went
away to sea and never really got into the habit of sitting for hours
watching 'stuff' again, 90% of the content even these days literaly sends me
to sleep after about 30 minutes. Most of the time it is just background
noise or a music channel.

After a serious injury to my arm I began playing a MMORPG while
recuperating, the darn thing was so addictive that 3.5 years later I was
still building the daft character. The time demanded by the creators to
access most useful objects was immense and sometimes it did occur to me that
this was the ideal setting for a present day Pavlov or Skinner to have a
field day studying the behaviour of real human subjects.
As for dreaming I seem to remember some of the other players mentioning on
the forums that sometimes they dreamed in the role of their game character
probably after extensive and prolonged 'grinding' sessions.

Cool. My thoughts too. Very easy to fool people on VR with regards to
sex, sexuality or ethnicity (not even that difficult with todays
resynthesys technology to change the gender of your voice for live
chat) . I'm upfront on these issues should they ask- they rarely
do.... Nationality however ISN'T easy to fake. I find it almost
impossible to pretend that I'm not English- I don't think I could
manage this even as a fluent foreign language speaker!

The thing that became a bit of a problem with this particular game as it grew in scale was the onset of ageism, originally the number of adult player was at a level where being over 21 did not really matter but as the game expanded and became more commercialised in the direction of the 13-18 year old market it became a less attractive environment for adults to be.

As there were for lack of a better word plenty of beggars it was not difficult even with limited Spanish to pass as a non English speaker for short periods just to evade being followed round and asked for items or gold which could be a pain and often ended in an un-needed argument.

As for gender swapping, cybersex and all that kind of thing there was a lot went on where the game started so to speak in the areas where the 'noobs' congregated but if you were into the game for it's own sake most players left those areas in a day or so and miscreants generally were filtered out either by mods or the disapproval of more experienced players.
