The English Civil War was in the 17th century, is that what you
call 'ancient'?

in a post modern sort of a way, yes...
but I know what you mean, I'd still say true ancient battles were
much more than just push and shove... romans knew how to hold a
tortoise formation, had some hi-tec weaponry in catapults,
ballista and pilum, and celts would attempt to disrupt tortoise
with some ingenious methods and jump into the tortoise etc. so
not just a scrum, they also had cavalry with chariots.

Ponies.

I don't think you would be arguing the toss, while wondering why
your legs are not connected at the shins anymore, after the chariot
scythe just took them off... ;)

I might if scythe chariots didn't exist in Britain.

OK, touche... just seen the jstor article messrs jeremiah and tylor
claiming perhaps contrariwise... don't know... not paying that bunch
of hiders of information for profit...

perhaps you would be more the kind to have been found in colchester
anyway... boldly saying "they've only got ponies"... chariots with
scythes not so useful there... but that didn't seem to help the Romans/
Romano-Celts much... no doubt however there is a jstor article claiming
colchester never actually existed and the ruins there are actually a
circa 1954 experiment in creating fake ruins....

and really I'd say that article attempting to poo-poo the idea of
Boudica in a scythed chariot is not really on solid foundations given
the Roman historical record stating the British had scythed chariots.

"They make war not only on horseback but also from 2 horse chariots and
cars armed in the Gallic fashion – they call them covinni – on which
they use axles equipped with scythes” (Pomponius Mela (3,52) c. 44 AD).
"

obviously, scythed chariots would be a small contingent of a special type
of first wave attack force, as once your own troops have engaged you
don't want to be lopping off their legs as well, so in the main chariots
were not scythed which is why perhaps evidence of them has not been dug
up yet, when many two horsed non scythed British chariots have been
excavated.
