it is common....the brainless roo does it all the time...
some of them are 10 or more nyms....
I think it would be an interesting study in abnormal psychology or whatever
to see just what mania/phobia causes someone to do this.

a lot of them here are highly isolated....
they've spent their lives trying to be taken seriously.....
they've never achieved anything that sets them apart
     or gave them a feeling of importance of uniqueness...
they are frustrated and angry...
many are retired and venting here....

they're bored....they're attention seeking....etc...

trouble is to get them to educate themselves....to concentrate outside
      themselves....but that requires work....
they spend their lives being told what to think by pols and the fossil
     media....they spend their lives in front of the boob tube....
     watching mindless things like football....
always spectators/consumers....

Many people of the roo type have sock puppets but this is a different
situation in that there is no main 'character' that the sock puppets belong
to but just a panoply of false names.........

actors i know take on parts....there is no personality inside...
    just a series of coats they wear and discard....

we've got a current invasion of 'them'....
it's the silly season....

no-one answers them so they answer themselves in order to persuade
     others they are not alone....and therefore that real people
     should take them seriously...

they want company.....they want to chatter....worse they want people
     to listen to them....
but they have nothing useful to say.....

it can't be comfortable for them....

no point getting angry in return.....just be there and hope some of
     them grow up

ISTR that the sci-fi author Ray Bradbury dealt with something similar to
this in one of the Martian Chronicles.
