Gary McKinnon, a British hacker accused of infiltrating almost 100

rights would be infringed by U.S. officials who told him prosecutors
in New Jersey wanted to see him ``fry.'' McKinnon said he was also
told that if he didn't accept a plea bargain he'd get a longer jail
term entirely served in the U.S.
The ``case could have been properly dealt with by our own prosecuting
authorities,'' McKinnon's lawyers at London-based Kaim Todner LLP said
in an e-mailed statement. ``Instead, we believe that the British
government declined to prosecute him to enable the U.S. government to
make an example of him.''

Couldn't he easily have avoided all this?

How was he to know the merkins would want to make an example of him and
want him to "fry" etc.

Is that an answer as to whether he couldn't easily have avoided his current problems?

Are we supposed to feel sorry for him?

That's not the point. The point is our spineless establishment.
