Google is celebrated as being a wonderful thing.
But why does it boast about returning 6 million possible pages when I only
ever want one page? What lunatic could possibly want 6 million pages?
Google's over ten years old, and despite accruing billions in income it
still can't answer a simple question.
What's the value of helping to spread lies? Why should Google present
results that falsely tell me milk curdles before a storm or that the moon
landings never occurred?
Why should businesses agonise over changing Google algorithms every three
months in order to keep their websites visible? How can this possibly help a
consumer know which company will sell them the best T-shirts at the best
price?
What's so great about a pyramid scheme of page ranking when all it does is
freeze knowledge and reduce information to the lowest common denominator?
My main criticism of Google is that it is crap at searching. I tell it
to only search UK sites, but it returns US ones as well. I ask it to
find something and it returns a whole host of "almost-hits", as if to
say, "We couldn't find the left-handed monkey wrench you wanted, but
here's a banana."
It is ***, but it has now become THE internet search engine, probably
because all the others are equally crap or worse.
As for searching Usenet in Google Groups, don't get me started...!
