"I think that his execution was a waste of his talent, a
degradation of the public, and an indictment against British justice.
This is May 12th 2008 and I remember very clearly that warm Sunday
afternoon of May 10th 1959 during which I read about it in the papers.

I might have tolerated the death penalty being used on him if he
had committed crimes as heinous as those of some of today's knife-
thugs or of somebody like Rose West, but he didn't. Though obviously
he needed to be punished."

Interesting that 'today's knife thugs' provoke so many people into
thinking that a few well publicised hangings might have a most
salutary effect. It can seem fair that those who live by the knife
have declared war on society and could be done away with without
compunction. The reality would probably be quite ugly as we would be
seen to be hanging a lot of blacks.

-------------------------

Until society  gathers itself together properly and returns to sanity,
the present number of knife (and gun) attacks will continue and
multiply.

~ “Depend upon it, Sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a
fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully“.-- Samuel Johnson.

Mr Johnson knew what he was talking about. Why should a thug, knife or
shoot whomever he pleases and know that his life is untouchable?

The death penalty is still with us of course…….Gangsters, thugs and
muggers know that they have this weapon to use at will…….It is only
civilised society that has rejected the only real way of controlling
those who kill for money and kicks.

Woolly headed thinking and sheer weakness has led us into the mess we
are in; it is time for a change.- Hide quoted text -

Who knows for you may get your wish if we have some major disruption
like nuclear war or an epidemic which decimates the population and
totally disorganises society. We may even see capital punishment for
theft reintroduced - happy days what?

When it comes to pulling the lever or flicking the switch I suspect
that there are very few people indeed who want to see it's
reintroduction - for reasons including the difficulty of obtaining
and safety of convictions, hung for a sheep syndrome, and the american
experience.

I know many who would willingly pull the hanging lever to rid us of
many of the scum ruling our police free streets. Allf things have a
point of counter-action, we are nearly there.

So you think that a man who openly knifes a human being in Oxford
street and then lifts him up by the hair and slits his throat deserves
to live so that he can do the deed another day?

It's not primarily about what he deserves but rather about increasing
the likelihood of him being taken off the streets. For all I know he
may not be fully responsible for his actions for example if he were a
psycopath being cared for in the community who has  occasional urges
to kill.

Everybody should be held fully responsible for their actions.

Would that apply when an innocent man is hanged?

Also, it's both about taking him off the streets, and about society
taking revenge on him.

Some would be content to leave that to God.
