Yep - like with GM products.
like
the new collider the mad scientists have built that other serious
scientists are concerned that they might accidentally create a
black hole... or perhaps a super chain reaction explosion....
Do you have any links to articles about this? It sounds
interesting.

I posted the latter to give official opinion but also because it
explicitly says they want to create big bang like conditions....
hmmm... perfectly safe then.....

Although Cern becomes operational this year, the black hole won't be
created until 2012 the last day of the Mayan Calendar so plenty of time
to pay your mortgage off!.
However lets not forget the eu will have produced guide lines for
particle accelerators by that time, which will provide acceptable shape
and size for black holes and exotic particles. They're on to a win win
situation here of course. If they get their measurements right they'll
be heroes and if not there will be no one around to complain.
well they might prove existing theories complete hogwash... so not
completely guaranteed win-win.....

and another funny interpretation of the story...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03/28/
lhc_cern_hawaiian_botanist_lawsuit/

they might simply have miscalculated the time they expect the black hole to be in existance... it actually having enough time to devour the collider, staff and mountain range before collapsing... but then I doubt any of the bigwigs behind the operation will be anywhere near it when the tricky stuff starts....

Since Nature regularly bombards the Earth with higher energy particles than CERN will generate there is no danger.
Also, the worst possible outcome is that it shows no problems with current theories.
