If you don't help young people to discipline themselves, then they willbe
undisciplined. Young men are naturally interested in violent self-
expression, and it's easier to practise this against people who aren't
interested in fighting. Also, goth-ism (like other signs of being
different) impinges on the ego. It's a sign of above-average
intelligence and isn't interested in communicating with stupid violent
creatures. The reports say they were talking in a good-natured way to
start with but you can imagine that the victim Maltby lost interest in
humouring the macho nonsense. That rejection would have been very
frustrating to Herbert and Harris as another attack on their egos. I
don't understand why they turned on the girl Sophie Lancaster though.
