Excellent. I would very much like to be able to disagree with much of it
- unfortunately I can't (especially the last paragraph)!

Ditto!

I once worked for a smallish company that was rappidly going down the pan -
largely due to competition from cheaper rivals.
They were struggling to get finance from the bank to support and expansion,
growth, new equipment etc...all the things a business needs to thrive and
prosper.
Profits were being swallowed up by costs.
There were as many manager and middle managers as there were staff actually
doing the work.

The staff could have (and did try to) identified a thousand ways that this
company could have streemlined the operations...identified numerous areas of
waste and missmanagement.

The management refused to listen.
Their chosen solution was a re-launch with a total re-branding of the
company!
To this end they had meeting after meeting...culminating in the entire
management spending a 'weekend away' in some plush hotel where they held
'brainstorming sessions' to choose a new name and company logo.
I kid you not...they must have spent thousands of pounds on this venture.

3 months later, the company folded regardless!

Talk about fiddling while Rome burned.

Yep, I bet tens of thousands of people could tell a similar story. 'Re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic', would just about sum them up!
