"So far, around 4,000 homeowners have installed PV in the UK, but the
figure is dwarfed by the take-up in Germany, where a guaranteed energy
price using a feed-in tariff has led to around 800,000 properties
having the technology installed leading to calls by Friends of the
Earth and the Renewable Energy Association for a change in the UK's
support scheme."
Solar power is substantially more expensive than conventional electricity
and other forms of renewable electricity, but it *does* make economic sense
if used as a replacement for petrol. A 25kWh-battery powered vehicle costs
£1 in conventional electricity to charge up, and perhaps £5 in solar terms,
but if that gives a 125 mile range (see the Tesla or the Wrightspeed X1),
then that is the same as £10 or more of petrol.
Well, why not just charge an electric car off the mains? Well you could,
but most domestic supplies would take 6 hours to charge 25kWh, so you would
probably have to charge a replacement battery outside the car and replace
the car battery or do a quick charge of stored energy when the car is back
at home, so a solar panel could do the charging over many hours. More
expensive than mains electricity at the moment, but much cheaper than
petrol.
