Perhaps, but he has a point.

I don't think he has. Look at these pics...

The trees haven't burned; the houses have. I think this makes
sense in that the living tree contains water and the house
is made of very dry seasoned wood (perhaps painted).

My sympathies are different to the OP
concerning the unfortunates who have lost their homes but disliking the
USA as much as he probably,

His hatred seems more like
an involuntary bowel movement
than mere dislike.

he is right about the trees close to houses
which bring a danger that is exacerbated by the fact that the houses
themselves are made of wood.

Well, the frame is; the outside is stucco
and the roof is tile.

Here where I live we are also subject to
forest fires and one of the reasons why there is little loss of life or
property is because it is obligatory to clean away the brush around
houses over a 50 metre radius, cut branches that are lower than 2 metres
from any trees there, and not have trees overhanging the house. Simple
and effective precautions that the Californians don't seem to have
cottoned on to yet.

Many do, actually.

It is quite typical around here to surround houses with ice-plant,
and squishy form of ground plant that won't burn. Here, for example,
is a fire that happened a few miles from my home. As you can
see the fire is roaring up the canyon, but it did not
reach the homes due to the ice-plant border.

The plants which are burning have adapted to burn regularly and
in fact need burning off to thrive.

"In California, chaparral ecosystems burn in large landscape-
scale crown fires that are necessary for the ecology of these
systems but pose a threat to people in nearby developments.
USGS research shows that many species in these systems are
highly dependent on recurrent fire because some seeds require
smoke to induce germination. Unlike western forests where a
century of fire exclusion has led to fuel accumulation and a
risk of catastrophic wildfires, USGS research has shown that
large, intense fires have burned in chaparral ecosystems for
numerous decades. They occur, in league with powerful Santa
Ana winds, as frequently today as before widespread fire
management aimed at fire exclusion. Here the use of prescribed
fire is not necessary for ecosystem health, nor is it able to
prevent large-scale fires."

If there is nothing to catch fire around your house
then it is probable that your house won't catch fire either?

That makes sense, particularly if the tree was eucalyptus, which is
very popular around here, but the photographic evidence I found
seems to argue against this.
