Now, where in history have we heard of this before... oh yes, Mosely
in the UK, and in Nazi Germany with the SS.

Long, black leather coats for the CID next. RH

For decades, a white shirt and black clip- on tie has been part of a
police officer's uniform.

But the dangers of modern policing - which mean officers must wear
body armour on patrol - have led one force to swop the traditional
attire for something more practical.

From next month all of West Mercia's bobbies will wear black zip-up
tops when they are on the beat.

The change is due to be introduced in a fortnight. It leaves the
force, which covers Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire, open
to criticism that its officers will resemble members of a paramilitary
organisation.

But West Mercia's chiefs say the traditional uniform had become
"increasingly impractical".
