Thank the Lord you were born in a country where capitalism rules the

Let me just add, in case you really are ignorant of the fact (and its
not one of your supposedly clever subterfuges) that the reason people in
this country have the welfare state is most certainly NOT because of
capitalist preferences, the reason the welfare state exists is because of
Christian and Socialist activists. (the same with the abolition of the
slave trade, you will find capitalists most vehemently opposed to
abolition)
Capitalists have always had the lowest regard for the worker and wanted to
pay the least possible and take the least possible care over their
employees welfare.
So don't come round here trying to say its all because we live in a
capitalist country we have it "so good".
Of course capitalism is no good!
Just take a comparative look at the former socialist regimes of the
former Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine
and the rest of them. My how their populations prospered under
socialism. Take another look at Viet Nam, Cuba, North Korea, Laos,
Cambodia, Burma and even Communist China itself before in their
inimitable and imaginative way they incorporated capitalist principles
into their own particular socialist model.
Is the world as a whole embracing socialism or turning its collective
back on it?
Your reading of history is a little simplistic too. Many olde worlde
capitalists had a philanthopic leaning as foundation stones of many of
our finest urban public buildings provided by them testify. Ever heard
of the Carnegie Institutes? and various halls and librairies dotted
round the world? Heard of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation? The Cadbury
Trust? The Wellcome trust?
And of today's generation the Alan Sugar Foundation? The Virgin
Foundation? Various Gates charities?
Of course a died in the wool socialist like yourself would rather
wealth and/or inheritance taxes would consign the wealth of these to
"the people" (or the favoured people!) They have better ideas and
always did have!
Slavery? There is no place in slavery within capitalism if only
because it is too damned inefficient. A man works better for the
prospect of personal reward and enhancement rather than mere
maintanance. Did the impetus to end slavery in the US (and ipso facto
the Western World altogether) come from the conservative plantation
owners in the south or the progressive industrialists of the north?
It is true that unions and political parties fought not without
success to improve the lot of the masses. However, there is one
important rider. No union or whatever could ever wrest from the bosses
that which they did not have. Better wages and conditions could only
come out of higher profits and not the other way round.Milk the cow
too hard and it goes dry.
Indeed at one time it appeared that socialism might be winning. After
WW2 a whole tranche of British basic industry was taken over "on
behalf of the people" (or the favoured people!) What happened to these
once the Golden Goose was gone? Good money was thrown after bad,
grandiose plans came and went, we fell further and further behind as a
nation. We didn't really start to look up again until these industries
were given back to those who knew how to run them.
