I predict that the day will come when ID cards are introduced, and it

will be welcomed and accepted by the vast majority of British people.
That day will come when there is a further terrorist atrocity in the
UK. ID cards will only be part of the future battle against terrorism,
as well as illegal immigration.
Please elaborate your theory....
Why do you think a card will stop a potential bomber?
How will a little plastic card stop *illegal* immigration?
(bear in mind we already have passports).
I think the issue of ID cards is well beyond party politics, and that
all three main parties should discuss the issue rationally and without
reference to party politics. The alternative is to procrastinate on an
issue that could well help in the fight against terrorism, and the
consequences are for us all to bear.
Same as above....Why will it help the fight against terrorism?
please don't ignore the question, i'm really interested in your reply.
I have NEVER used the word 'stop' regarding terrorism or illegal
immigration and the use of ID cards. I have always used the word
'help' wrt to tackling these problems.
There are several assumptions that must be made and these must work in
synchronism for an ID card system to be effective. Also everything has
to be tied in with a strengthening of our borders. The assumptions
are:-
- an amnesty for all illegal immigrants already here
- a National Identity Register, with biometric/DNA profiling for all
people living in the UK, say by 2012 (but obviously the real date has
to be well thought through)
- the issuing of ID cards for all here by 2012
- various laws are in place that mean if someone employs someone
without an ID card that has been verified as that person then s/he
will be acting illegally, and appropriate action taken against him/her
So, envisaging a situation in 2012 where all people are registered,
have ID cards and have biometric and other data held on them (the
majority of data is already held by one organisation or another
anyway, both government and private companies). Now let's face
reality, some people will still get into the UK illegally no matter
what government is in and no matter how tight our borders are.
Hopefully it will not happen very often but nonetheless it will still
happen on occasions. They'll get here and find it very difficult to
work here, if the right measures are in place as I mentioned in my
assumptions. Then they will not find any success in coming to the UK
and this message will very quickly spread - if they can't get work and
can't get benefits they won't want to come. If they get into trouble
with the law the authorities will know instantly that they are
illegally here because they are not biometrically 'known', have no ID
card etc. Then the necessary procedures can be applied to get them
exported. We have to make the UK totally unattractive to illegal
immigration at the same time as tightening the borders.
The benefits of an ID card system in helping to fight terrorism are
there, but a lot less than in the fight against illegal immigration.
However it is clear and obvious that if we have biometric/DNA
profiling on everyone in the UK the police stand a much better chance
of detecting terrorist activities as well as other crimes.
I am not arguing that ID cards/NIR/biometric/DNA profiling is the
answer to illegal immigration and the fight against terrorism in all
aspects. This is definitley not the case...but these things can and
should be used in the battle. Most people would come to accept these
things because most people are law abiding, and work and live in the
UK legally.
The are clearly control measures that need to be in place to ensure
data held is secure/updateable and used only in the right circumstance
and only by the right people and only at the right time.
We have the choice of being pro-active and forward-thinking in the
intelligent and ethically correct use of technology in the battle
against illegal immigration and terrorism. It is time for the major
parties to get together and work together on this issue...as I have
said before it is above party politics. The alternative is what we
have now...chaos, an unknown number of illegal immigrants already
here, working here etc. etc. The situation needs to be got of top of
and managed far better in the future.
