(and are you sure of this?.....the wife's 'contributions' are taken
automatically from her wages each month...and we don't recall ever being
given the option of opting out of any 'political funds'

I am absolutely sure of this. It's a right enshrined in law. I used to
be a union rep at work although I cannot recall ever processing such a
request.

However, opting out of contributions does not entitle a member to a
reduction in subs. The only difference it makes is that this component
of the members contribution is diverted to the general funds of the
union which are ringfenced for the sole purpose of administering the
union. The purpose to which the politcal fund is put is a matter for
individual unions but will include, for example, expenses incurred in
lobbying MPs, expenses of delegates attending political party
conferences, affililiation fees to political parties (if union rules
so permit) and so on.
