Re: Global warming - is the Sun to blame? The increased solar activity has occurred in parallel with an increase in carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere... Warmer oceans absorb less carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Global warming - is the Sun to blame?

I've been saying the same thing for a while now, according to what I've read
the "so called" experts are saying that the whole planetary Solar System is
heating up, the only thing within distance to affect that would be our Sun
but the GW kooks cannot see the forest for the trees. As far as they are
concerned it's all man made end of story because their "so called" experts
have said so. It's a double edged sword. The only problem is that it's now
at the top of the Political agenda, Politicians see it as vote winners, even
if it never transpires. Most of the Politicians will be dead within the next
50 years so they won't give a stuff as long as it keeps them in a nice cushy
job.

Washington View: Educated global-warming plan a fiscal must

At the same time Al Gore brought his climate change crusade to
Congress, NASA released information showing that solar radiation plays
a major role in global warming.

Gore believes greenhouse gas accumulations are causing glaciers to
melt and sea levels to rise. He says accelerated burning of coal and
petroleum to generate electricity and propel cars is trapping more and
more carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.

The former vice president believes the way to reverse this buildup is
to levy new pollution taxes, freeze carbon dioxide emissions, put a
moratorium on coal-fired power plants, impose stricter vehicle fuel
economy rules, and create a federally operated Carbon Neutral Mortgage
Association to provide incentives for building energy-efficient homes.

Before we act precipitously, we ought to look carefully at all the
science. No one knows the real answers to climate change.

For example, NASA researchers recently found clear links between the
sun's activity and climate variations.

Dr. Alexander Ruzmaikin and Dr. Joan Feynman of NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, along with Dr. Yuk Hung of the California Institute of
Technology, analyzed records kept by the Egyptians between 622 A.D.
and 1470 A.D. charting the annual water level in the Nile, the world's
longest river. The pharaohs kept very accurate records because of the
river's importance to their agriculture and religion.

Researchers compared these records to well-documented observations of
the aurora borealis -- or Northern Lights -- colorful, glowing
patterns of light in the northern night skies caused by solar
radiation interacting with Earth's magnetosphere. The Northern Lights
are a reliable indicator of the sun's activity. NASA scientists found
that when solar activity is high, conditions on Earth are drier; when
it is low, conditions are wetter.

NASA is not alone in linking solar activity to global warming. In
2006, Duke University researchers who studied the Earth's surface
temperatures over the last century concluded that the sun contributed
as much as half of the global warming over that time and 25 to 30
percent of the warming from 1980 to 2000. The scientists said their
findings suggest that the solar impact on climate change during the
same period is significantly stronger than what some theoretical
models have predicted."

Enormously high stakes
Some are warning that implementing Gore's agenda could devastate the
global economy.

In a letter to Congress, Czech President Vaclav Klaus warned that the
United States is poised to waste a lot of money on climate change and
strongly questions what good it will do. He believes poor nations
would be hurt by efforts to impose greenhouse gas limits. If America
wants to save the world, he says, it would be better off spending its
money fighting world hunger and diseases.

The stakes are enormously high. If climate change is related more to
solar radiation than human activity, we could waste trillions of
dollars and needlessly put our economy at risk. Nations that implement
Gore's recommendations would be at a serious disadvantage to those who
ignore them.

There is no question that air pollution is choking many parts of
China, India and other developing nations where industrial growth is
exploding. We must develop cleaner, more efficient power plants,
homes, appliances, factories, transportation and alternative energy
sources. We must also encourage other countries to make the same
commitments to environmental improvements that we do. Regardless of
where we live, we must all conserve, recycle and reduce wastes. We
must use energy wisely and be good stewards of our planet's resources.

The question isn't whether or not our planet is warming up -- it has
been since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. The question
that needs to be answered is, could human activity be the primary
cause?

Until we can answer that question, we should not stop progress in its
tracks in the name of global warming but continue to make incremental,
measured improvements. As NASA's studies point out, there are serious
questions about what is driving our current climate change. The
Earth's climate has shifted drastically countless times in its history
and will continue to do so.
