Re: Moon landing - did it really happen?

but one thing that has always (for me at least) put a big question mark over
the whole event is the simple question.....following the laye 60's / early
70's Appolo missions....why didn't we ever return (in the 80' or the
90's...when technology was so much more advanced)????

Rocket technology has not advanced much in the intervening period, as
you may have noticed. It still takes tens of millions of GBP/USD to put
so much as a satellite in Earth orbit, never mind to put a man on the
moon, which is a vastly more difficult undertaking. Advances have
happened in areas such as computer technology, but that is not the
primary driver of moon programme cost. So, the base technology for a
moon landing today is much the same as in the 60s and 70s. That drives
the expense and difficulty.

Bear in mind that exactly one country managed a moonshot. If it was so
easy why haven't the Russians, Chinese or Europeans followed? Then,
after six landings, NASA changed its policy altogether, from Apollo to
Shuttle. This effectively replaced moon-capable spacecraft with a
system only capable of reaching Earth orbit. When I last looked the
shuttle was still flying.

It seems inconceivable that we could achieve something with (relative)
apparent ease, back in 1968/72 (several times apparently).....and then let
it all rest for 35 years!

It took 10 years, tens of thousands of technicians and between 1 and 5
percent of the US federal budget. I would not use a phrase like
'apparent ease'.

Sometimes the world is exactly as it appears.
