you may have noticed. It still takes tens of millions of GBP/USD to put
so much as a satellite in Earth orbit, never mind to put a man on the
moon, which is a vastly more difficult undertaking. Advances have
happened in areas such as computer technology, but that is not the
primary driver of moon programme cost. So, the base technology for a
moon landing today is much the same as in the 60s and 70s. That drives
the expense and difficulty.
Bear in mind that exactly one country managed a moonshot. If it was so
easy why haven't the Russians, Chinese or Europeans followed? Then,
after six landings, NASA changed its policy altogether, from Apollo to
Shuttle. This effectively replaced moon-capable spacecraft with a
system only capable of reaching Earth orbit. When I last looked the
shuttle was still flying.
It seems inconceivable that we could achieve something with (relative)It took 10 years, tens of thousands of technicians and between 1 and 5
apparent ease, back in 1968/72 (several times apparently).....and then let
it all rest for 35 years!
