How do they get their statistics?

Big Brother gets record ratings (what is the world coming to?)

Do TV's have a network connection over the mains power supply or
something?
No, but if you visit The Broadcasters' Audience Research Board website
at http://www.barb.co.uk/about.cfm?flag=about you'll find out how they
calculate such figures.

Ah so its one of those scaled up survey loads of bollocks then.

I wouldn't be suprised if being on a channel for 2 seconds while hopping
through did not register as a "viewer" so a single person could record 30
or 40 viewers of a single program.
If you had bothered to visit the site and read it you would know why you are
wrong, why I would not bother telling you about the site.

The site gives no details on how it counts a "viewer" or how long the
program has to stay on screen or if it filters multiple channel changes
to the same channel as a single viewing or what, all it says is it auto
identifies what is being watched even from video tape which implies a
signal within the tv signal that is an identifier.

'The panel member does not need to do anything else for BARB to capture all the viewing in each household everyday. Throughout the day the meter system stores all viewing undertaken by the entire household. Each night between 2am and 6am the data processing centre automatically downloads the data from every panel home (a process known as 'polling'). This procedure is carried out on every panel home every day to produce live 'overnight' minute-by-minute television viewing data.

'Video playback is measured if it takes place within 7 days of the original broadcast. This viewing (known as timeshift viewing) is then added to the live data to produce the final, minute-by-minute consolidated audience, available 8 days after the original transmission date.

'Channels reported by BARB provide detailed timings of the programmes and commercials they broadcast. The records that this produces are then matched to the minute-by-minute viewing data to produce the BARB official audience estimates for programmes and commercials.'

(fifth page of explanation on their website).

Since one of the main uses of BARB figures is to provide media buyers detailed figures of how many potential punters each advertising slot is delivering, everyone's got an interest in trying to ensure pretty accurate extrapolations.
