These military planning documents show that the Russians were literally
planning to 'roll their tanks across Europe'. Now you say they weren't
'planning to start a new war', which is, of course in the province of
their political leadership. These are the same people, by the way, who
staged three full-scale land invasions during the Cold War. The peoples
of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan would testify to the
'peaceful' intentions of the USSR. So, you have a military planning an
armoured thrust that stops at the Atlantic coast and a political
leadership with a bent towards aggression, and you wonder why people
were worried.
