Support for identity cards has slumped dramatically since plans were
made to introduce them, according to the latest survey.
The report by YouGov suggests that backing for the controversial cards
now stands at just 45 per cent, a dramatic dip from the 78 per cent
who backed them in a similar survey in 2003.
It found that just 10 per cent of those questioned expect the system
to be introduced efficiently, against 84 per cent who said it would
bring "disruption and inconvenience".
A recent report by the London School of Economics said the scheme
would cost £19 billion over ten years, or up to £300 per person, three
times what the Government claims.
When asked, 81 per cent of those asked said they would not support the
introduction of ID cards if the cost was £300 each.
The Government saw 20 of its backbench MPs rebel against the scheme
last week during the ID Card Bill's second reading.
